Piano Solo - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1376326 By Heidi Savoie. By Heidi Savoie. Arranged by Heidi Savoie. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Jazz,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 1 pages. Heidi Savoie #960870. Published by Heidi Savoie (A0.1376326). This is a solo piano arrangement of Almost May, best suited for an early intermediate player. Almost May - Theme and VariationsBackstory: Years ago I wrote a simple piano piece for my students. As instrumental music can fully exist outside the confines of words, it can be difficult to find the right title for something that is pure sound and possibility. I took inspiration from the time of year in which I had composed it and stamped it, “Almost May”. Like springtime in the Northern Hemisphere, “Almost May” unfolds slowly and majestically, with ever-evolving layers for the senses to discover. What to listen for: ThemeThe main theme is first presented by the piano with minimal fanfare. This part was written to be easy enough for a child, which despite being sparing of notes, delivers rich harmonic content. Every note has been carefully curated for the optimal combination of accessibility and depth. Weaving chromatically into distantly-related keys, the melody takes small steps into contrasting musical spaces. In a wordless procession, the storyline plays out, as if the theme discovers that someone very different lives next door, and they slowly become inseparable. The piano is accompanied by an airy touch of brushes against a snare drum, like the pitter patter of soft feline steps. In the low frequency range, the upright bass supports and deepens the tonal palette with its earthy underpinnings. What to listen for: Variation I The unmistakable string section arrives like a breath of warm air. Lush, warm and reassuring like sunshine on your cheeks, the string parts begin with long tones. This broadness and stability will evolve into more layers of complexity throughout the section. While the role of the string section is background accompaniment, it undergoes textural changes which allow for some layers to briefly rise to the forefront as melody. Careful listening to the string parts will reveal an oceanic churning, a motion from background to foreground with expansions and contractions along the way. Floating overtop this density is the improvised piano solo, with ascending gestures that progress in detail and density. Each instrument enters a general unfolding and growth period in the first variation. The bass and drums include more fills than before, as the ensemble tends gradually toward more grandeur. What to listen for: Variation II The final variation opens with a decadent treatment of the melody. What was initially expressed by a soloist as a childlike plea is reimagined as a two-part conversation between the piano and lead viola. The obbligato voiced in the viola is a derivation of the melody that holds the space between phrases so the listener's attention is passed seamlessly between the piano and viola part. This dialogue features commentary on the original melody in the form of ornamentation and taking surprising pathways to expected destinations. The rhythm section (bass and drums) takes more liberties in creating a verdant soundscape as the ensemble rises to a final climax.

She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else” grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since. The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.

Concert Band - Level 3 - SKU: A0.976737 Composed by Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Robert Myers. 20th Century,Folk,World. Score and parts. 113 pages. WheatMyer Music #6621545. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976737). Andaluza, taken from Manuel de Falla’s piano suite Cuatro Piezas Españolas, is aimed at the mainstream high school band in the United States at the grade 4 level. Boisterous tuttis, intimate solos, and passionate melodies make for an engaging excursion into Spanish folk music that allows students to explore the adventurous harmonies of de Falla's impressionistic vocabulary. The variety of colors and energy in the modern concert band amplify the life, drama, and humanity de Falla poured into his piano version. Andaluza will thus prove a thrill for both performers and audience as it celebrates this life, drama, and humanity.Soprano Sax is called for on an expressive solo but is fully cued in oboe. The absence of this instrument need not prevent an integral performance of the music.Optional parts are provided for Eb Clarinet, Treble Clef Baritone, and Double Bass for those bands having these available.View a full preview score of Andaluza at my website (wheatmyermusic.com/product/andaluza) or drop an email and I'll provide a pdf of the score for your perusal.Andaluza is the fourth member of Manuel de Falla’s Cuatro Piezas Españolas for solo piano first published in 1909. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. But it was so rewarding to have done so and I hope you find the rewards of listening just as much worth your effort.Robert MyersS.D.G.INSTRUMENTATION:PiccoloFlute 1, 2OboeBassoon 1,2Bb Clarinet 1, 2Bb Bass ClarinetBb Soprano SaxophoneEb Alto Saxophone 1, 2Bb Tenor SaxophoneEb Baritone SaxophoneBb Trumpet 1, 2, 3Horn in F 1, 2, 3, 4Trombone 1, 2Bass TromboneEuphonium TubaTimpani (4) Mallets: Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Vibraphone, MarimbaPercussion 1: Almglocken/Cowbell, Suspended Cymbal, Marimba, Snare Drum, Glockenspiel, Triangle, XylophonePercussion 2: Hand Cymbals, Suspended Cymbals, Snare Drum, Bongos, Mark TreePercussion 3: Tambourine, Castanets, Hand Cymbals, Rainstick, Gong, Tam, TamPercussion 4: Bass Drum, Suspended Cymbal, Gong, Tam Tam, WoodblocksOptional Parts: Eb Clarinet; Baritone T.C. 1, 2; Double Bass

Percussion Ensemble - Level 4 - SKU: A0.576482 Composed by David Warin Solomons. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz. Score and parts. 27 pages. David Warin Solomons #26925. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576482). A mad professor I invented during my childhood has been given fictional responsibility for some of my more outside the box compositions. I called him Professor Burble; he was probably inspired by TV cartoons in the 1960s.... The first Invention was for guitar solo (published by Productions d'Oz), the third one one was for two wind instruments (published by Musik Fabrik), and this one - number 4 - is for piano, strings, gong, cymbal, bass drum and side drum. It is in a relentless 5/4 rhythm and starts with a fugato idea on piano and strings (including several divisi moments), with gongs, cymbal and snare drums beginning about a minute into the piece.

C Instrument - Level 2 - SKU: A0.1376331 By Heidi Savoie. By Heidi Savoie. Arranged by Heidi Savoie. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Jazz,Singer/Songwriter. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 1 pages. Heidi Savoie #960874. Published by Heidi Savoie (A0.1376331). This is a lead sheet for any instrument for the song Almost May. Program note: My love affair with the city of Rome dates back to the year 1986-87 when I spent just under eleven months at the American Academy in Rome on a Rome Prize Fellowship. During that Fellowship year I was very much inspired by the beauty and culture of the Eternal City, which resulted in a number of works that continue to resonate with me: Twenty-nine Fireflies Book II for solo piano; Concertino for trumpet, timpani and strings; Apples … six dreams by Richard Kenney; String Quartet No 5 … Four Birthdays; and Chôrinhos … opus 38. Since 1997 my wife, Kristin Beckwith, and I have returned to the American Academy in Rome almost every year. I would compose in the morning and then my wife and I would go to our usual haunt at Bar G. for cappuccini and cornetti. And then we’d go to the local bakery and street markets and buy stuff for lunch. In the afternoon we would wander into the city to go shopping and sight-seeing. In the evenings we would dine at one of our favorite local trattorias. Life could not be better in Rome. Musically speaking, several important works in my portfolio had their beginnings during these sojourns at the Academy , among them Yo Picasso, Flauta Carioca, Mass for the Holy Year 2000, Symphony No. 5 … Utopia Parkway, Twenty-nine Fireflies Books IV & V, and Piano Concerto … Mozartiana. Just before the 2008 recession, clarinetist extraordinaire Jonathan Cohler asked me to write a symphony for the inaugural concert of a new orchestra he was planning to create. I came up with Symphony No. 7 … Roman Holidays, my give back to the city of Rome – a compendium of favorite places that continue to live in my thoughts and musings. Although the work is heard in four movements, it is actually divided into seven sections, as in the seven hills of Rome. 1. Prelude: Fontana Paola and the panoramic view of the city of Rome from that vantage point. 2. First interlude: La Befana festivities at Piazza Navona. The Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio at night under a full moon. 3. Second interlude: Fontana delle Tartughe in the Jewish Ghetto. Bernini’s Apollo and Daphne at the Galleria Borghese. 4. Third interlude: Bernini’s Beata Ludovica Albertoni in Trastevere. The Spanish Steps and the view of Rome from the French Academy at Villa Medici. NB: Unfortunately, thanks to the recession, Roman Holidays never saw the light of day. This year (2013) I decided to revisit the work, which lay dormant for 5 five years, and saw that it could use a little tweaking. The new version is essentially the same, musically speaking. I reduced the orchestration a bit (two horns instead of four, and two trumpets instead of three) and added more heft to the lower brass. I completely rewrote the tune for the floating foreign ghosts at the Protestant Cemetery. I also shortened the work by about three minutes by cutting some repeats. Released in Italy in 1964 and in the United States in 1967, the film initiated the popularity of the spaghetti Western genre. It was followed by For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, both also starring Eastwood. Collectively, the films are known as the Dollars Trilogy, or the Man with No Name Trilogy. The film's music was written by Ennio Morricone. Sergio Leone requested Morricone to write a theme that would be similar to Dimitri Tiomkin's El Degüello (used in Rio Bravo). Although the two themes are similar, Morricone stated that he used a lullaby that he had composed previously, and developed the theme from that. The song is characterized by a famous trumpet solo, played by the Apulian Michele Lacerenza; it was also released on 45 rpm by RCA Italiana and was one of the best-selling records of the year.Subscribe to my YouTube Channel to stay updated on new releases.

Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.840483). Historians of American musical theatre often consider The Black Crook the first Broadway musical. The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of The Black Crook is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director. This is a unique concert band arrangement of one of those piano pieces, a lively galop that has musical as well as historical interest. It's particularly appropriate for outdoor summer concerts, or as a curtain-raiser, finale, or encore for concerts at any time of the year. Written for an adult community band, it's also suitable for a college band or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 3:10. The audio clip is a complete outdoor summer concert performance by the Peninsula Symphonic Winds.Instrumentation: Piccolo / Flute / Oboe / E-flat Clarinet / Clarinet 1-2-3 / Alto Clarinet / Bass Clarinet / Bassoon / Alto Saxophone 1-2 / Tenor Saxophone / Baritone Saxophone / Trumpet 1-2-3 / Horn 1-2-3-4 / Trombone 1-2-3 / Euphonium / Baritone T.C. / String Bass / Percussion 1 (snare drum) / Percussion 2 (crash cymbal, concert bass drum) / Mallets (bells, xylophone) / TimpaniPlease visit my Web site to explore more classics for adventurous concert bands.

Concert Band - Level 5 - SKU: A0.840485 Composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. Arranged by Ted R. Marcus. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic. Score and Parts. 93 pages. Ted R. Marcus #3368179. Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.840485). The tonal palette of the modern concert band brings fresh color and variety to the complete second movement of Haydn's Surprise Symphony. The famous theme and one of the variations explore the subtle contrast between bassoon and English horn. The original repeats are opened up and scored differently, using contrasting colors and combinations of solo clarinet, solo flute, piccolo, and soprano saxophone. A repeated section first has a flute and oboe accompanied with clarinets, then a saxophone quartet on the repeat. One variation features a solo piccolo and bells. And a prominent pair of horns recalls the sound of Haydn's divertimenti for wind ensemble. Duration: approx. 6:00. Written for an adult community band, this challenging arrangement is appropriate for a university, college, or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. The bassoon, English horn, and soprano saxophone parts are all fully cued to allow rehearsal or performance in the absence of any or all of them. Two strong horn players are essential; but the third and fourth horn parts are easier, and cued in trombones and euphonium. The bassoon parts use the tenor clef and ascend to a high B-flat; the second bassoon has only one 8-measure high passage that doubles the horns and can be omitted if necessary. The alternate versions of both bassoon parts use only bass clef but are otherwise identical. All essential bassoon passages are cued in saxophone and bass clarinet parts.Instrumentation: Piccolo / Flute 1-2 / Oboe / English Horn / Clarinet 1-2-3 / Alto Clarinet / Bass Clarinet / Bassoon 1-2 (and alternate parts using only bass clef) / Soprano Saxophone / Alto Saxophone / Tenor Saxophone / Baritone Saxophone / Trumpet 1-2-3 / Horn 1-2-3-4 / Trombone 1-2-3 / Euphonium / Baritone T.C. / Tuba / String Bass / Percussion (snare drum, crash cymbals) / Mallets (xylophone, bells) / TimpaniPlease visit my Web site to explore more classics for adventurous concert bands.

Striadica: A Symphonic PassageThe every-day, reshaped by contingencies. The time-bound path twists through certainty, bewilderment, and fragile reconstruction. Upon release, recognition arrives.Duration: 8 - 9 mins.I was specifically asked to write a work where everyone had something to play. As is my usual style, I tend to allow the second players and less-prominent instruments a chance to shine, and in general shake up the usual orchestral hierarchy. (The second violins, for example, even get their own solo passage!)The wind parts are much more individualized, where the first part may have a completely different line than the second.A colleague who is a trombone player challenged me to write parts that sing for his instrument; hence the word dolce occurs in the low brass parts. Although the low brass parts are rather simple, they do require finesse and nuance. In general, none of the parts are overly challenging; rather, I hope each player finds the music allows them the opportunity to express themselves both individually and as an ensemble.Instrumentation1 Piccolo2 Flutes2 Oboes2 Clarinets in A2 Bassoons4 Horns in F2 Trumpets in C3 Trombones (2 Tenor, 1 Bass Trombone)1 TubaTimpani (B / D)Percussion: Wood Blocks, Snare Drum1 HarpStrings------Commissioned by the Lake Forest Civic Orchestra, IL.
